2009 VIRTUAL REUNION
"History"

Over the past ten years, we’ve used Internet technology to research, find, and connect with our American and Swedish families online. I’ve established “The Newquist Family” (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/e/w/Harvey-P-Newquist/), a website that documents those efforts and contains many records (history facts, photos, genealogy charts, etc.) of seven generations of the descendants of Peter Jonasson (1818-1889) and Christina Bengtsdotter (1824-1907). While the general public has access to this site and related links, it has privacy features to protect the information on 600 living relatives.

Most of our correspondence to cousins has been through e-mail. But the highlights of this endeavor have been our personal attendance at several extended family reunions which have been held in 1999 (Illinois), 2002 (Växjö, Sweden and Florida), 2004 (Illinois), and 2006 (Växjö). Approximately 75 relatives in each country have attended one or more of these local reunions, which were made possible by the planning efforts of a few dedicated cousins. The last two gatherings have been notable for the inclusion of one cousin traveling from Sweden to join the United States group, and five cousins from the US were graciously hosted by the Swedish group. Today, we are e-mailing and text-messaging internationally!

Following that 2006 gathering, we finally located over 60 long-lost cousins living in Sweden from two family branches – Johan and Anna. They readily e-mailed their new information, and they are now among approximately 450 individuals who have never attended any reunion. They have missed the rewarding opportunity to meet cousins, share stories and photo albums, obtain and update genealogy charts, view slide presentations, enjoy recreational activities, and receive mementos that record those happy events..

We are planning a “2009 Virtual Family Reunion” in October. Rather than individuals bearing the expense of travel and accommodations to meet at one particular location, the goal is to connect with all cousins on the secure Internet website http://www.newquistbooks.com/reunion/reunion.html at a specific period of time. Individuals and/or families can gather locally (IL, FL, AZ, CA, and Smålånd) before October, and then connect on the Internet with their distant relatives through e-mail, upload photos and use other popular communication methods and technology. We can also share our remembrances of attendance at births, graduations, weddings, anniversaries and funerals.

We’ll be contacting you for your comments and to determine the best way for you and your family to participate. And we happily look forward to continuing the wonderful history of extended family reunions and to “virtually” the largest get-together of our Swedish/American cousins.

2009 – Virituell återförening

Dom sista 10 åren har vi använt internet-teknologi för att forska kring, finna och skapa kontakt mellan våra amerikanska och svenska familjer online. Jag har skapat ”The Newquist Family” (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/e/w/Harvey-P-Newquist/), en hemsida som beskriver historien och innehåller mycket fakta (historiska fakta, foton, släktkartor, etc) om de sju generationer av ättlingar ifrån Peter Jonasson (1818-1889) och Christina Bengtsdotter (1824-1907). Alla har tillgång till denna hemsida men den har även speciella privata områden för att förhindra att vem som helst får tag i information om de nu 600 levande ättlingarna.

Det mesta utav korrespondansen emellan oss kusiner har skett via epost. Höjdpunkterna har dock varit vår personliga närvaro vid ett flertal utökade familjeåterföreningar vilka har hållts i 1999 (Illinois), 2002 (Växjö och Florida), 2004 (Illinois), och 2006 (Växjö). Runt 75 släktingar i varje land har närvarat vid en eller flera av dessa lokala återföreningar, vilka gjordes möjliga tack vare insatsen av ett fåtal dedikerade kusiner. Vid de sista två återföreningarna besökte en kusin från Sverige USA och fem kusiner from USA fick senare ett varmt mottagande när de besökte Sverige. Idag kommnicerar vi internationellt via epost och SMS!

Efter återföreningen 2006 så återfann vi till sist över 60 sedan länge förlorade kusiner som nu lever i Sverige i två delar av familjen – Johan och Anna. Dom gav oss snabbt mer information och vi har idag ungefär 450 individer som aldrig har deltagit i en släktåterförening. Dom har missat en gyllene möjlighet att träffa kusiner, dela berättelser och fotoalbum, få tillgång till och uppdatera släktträd, visa bildpresentationer och att umgås tillsammans.

Vi planerar nu för ett ”2009 Virituell släktåterförening” i oktober. Istället för att belasta individer med kostnade för resa och boende för att samlas på en plats så är nu målet att samla alla kusiner på en säker hemsida på internet http://www.newquistbooks.com/reunion/reunion.html under en viss tidsperiod. Individer och familjer kan samlas lokalt före oktober (Florida, Arizona, California och Småland), och sen ta kontakt med sina avlägsna släktingar via epost, ladda upp bilder och använda andra kommunicationsmetoder. Vi kan även skicka hälsningar vid t ex dop, studenten, bröllop och begravningar.

Vi kommer att kontakta er för att höra vad ni har att säga och för att komma fram till det bästa sätter för dig och din familj att delta. Och vi ser med glädje fram emot framtida återföreningar och den nu ”virituellt” största återförening hittils av våra Svensk/Amerikanska kusiner.
